Runny Nose

Causes & Complications

Nasal drainage or rhinorrhea/rhinitis is a common problem with a variety of causes. The drainage may be clear or colored. These symptoms may be a result of allergies, bacterial or viral infection, or sinusitis. Patient’s may also develop symptoms due to non-allergic rhinitis or age-related changes to the nose. Cold weather, spicy foods, crying, head trauma, and overuse of nasal decongestant sprays can also trigger a runny nose. The nasal drainage may also cause post nasal drip, cough, or nasal congestion.

Understanding the source of your symptoms is imperative because the treatment plans will vary depending on the cause. Treatment could include nasal saline sprays, medicated nasal spray, allergy testing and immunotherapy, antibiotics if due to infection, or surgery.
