Tonsils & Adenoids
Tonsils and adenoids are part of the body’s immune system. The tonsils are two masses located in the back of the throat and the adenoids are located in the back of the nose and typically are not visible through the mouth. They “sample” bacteria and viruses that enter the body through the mouth or nose which can lead to themselves becoming infected. Tonsils and adenoids can also become enlarged and lead to airway obstruction problems. Chronic tonsil and adenoid problems can lead to:
- Recurrent throat infections
- Chronic sinusitis
- Snoring and sleep apnea
- Nasal obstruction
- Recurrent and chronic ear infections
- Tonsil stones
It is important to be seen by an ENT physician if you have recurrent tonsil infections, loud snoring, or recurrent/chronic ear and sinus infections, to determine if removal of the tonsils and adenoids is warranted.
Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy surgery is a quick, outpatient procedure but typically has a 1-2 week recovery period. Our physicians can determine if surgery is right for you or your child. Please contact us today.
