Thyroid
The thyroid gland secretes thyroid hormone and plays an important role in regulating many of our bodily functions. Sometimes a nodule or growth develops in the thyroid gland and often these are benign but they can be cancerous and need to be removed. Thyroid nodules are typically evaluated using ultrasound and fine needle biopsy. The thyroid gland may also become enlarged (goiter) and can cause problems with breathing and swallowing or result in unwanted appearance of the neck. The thyroid may also become overactive (hyperthyroidism) or be affected by autoimmune conditions such as Graves’ Disease or Hashimoto’s Disease, which are often managed medically by a specialist, but occasionally require surgery.
Thyroid cancer or thyroid goiters are managed surgically and may require partial or total removal of the thyroid gland. Our physicians specialize in thyroid surgery and can develop a treatment plan based on your specific problems and diagnosis.
