Salivary Glands
There are several large salivary glands in the head and neck including the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. There are also numerous minor salivary glands throughout the mouth and throat. Problems can develop in salivary glands and can lead to infection and swelling. This is often caused by an obstruction of the salivary flow from stone. Benign and cancerous growths can also occur in the salivary glands. Treatment for salivary gland problems may include antibiotics, warm compresses, sucking on sour candy, increasing hydration, or surgery.
