Hearing Tests
Audiologic evaluations are made up of a series of individual diagnostic tests to determine if a hearing loss is present. Test results are charted on a graph called an audiogram, which measures the type and degree of hearing loss. Once testing is complete our audiologist will assess the results and work with each individual to develop a treatment plan tailored to their needs and lifestyle.
Hearing tests can be of benefit to patients of all ages, even if you currently do not suspect a hearing loss, establishing a baseline to compare to in the future is recommended. Hearing loss affects people of all ages. Anybody who suspects a hearing loss is strongly encouraged to complete audiologic testing. Early detection leads to more successful treatment outcomes and gives the patient more flexibility in treatment options.
Hearing aid evaluations
Once you have undergone a comprehensive audiologic evaluation and have been determined to be a candidate for hearing aids, the next step is a hearing aid evaluation. At this appointment there is a little more testing that is completed in the sound booth, such as speech-in-noise testing. These tests give the audiologist an idea of how an individual will perform with a hearing aid in certain listening situations. Following the testing our audiologist will discuss the different hearing aid styles and technology levels, and make their clinical recommendations for each patient. There are a multitude of factors that our audiologist considers when recommending a hearing aid including the type, degree and configuration of hearing loss, lifestyle needs, listening needs, cosmetic preferences and your budget.
Hearing aid fittings and adjustments
Being fit with hearing aids for the first time can often be intimidating to patients. At ENT Northwest your Audiologist will assess several factors from the physical fit of your aid to the acoustic fit. It is important to remember that when hearing aids are fit, we are also training the brain to receive auditory information that it has been missing, therefore counseling from the Audiologist is an important aspect of the fitting process. Counseling helps ensure that the patient enters into the fitting appointment having realistic expectations and sets you as the patient up for long-term success with your hearing aids.
Follow-up appointments and adjustments are critical to ensure your hearing aids serve you and your hearing needs for the life of the devices. It is recommended that you return about one week after being fit with your hearing aids so that our audiologist can fine-tune your hearing aids and address any questions or concerns that may arise.
Hearing loss can continue to progress once you have been fit with your hearing aids, which is why annual hearing testing and adjustments are important to keep your hearing aids in tip-top shape and programmed appropriately for your hearing loss.
